Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
